Elephant's Head

Pedicularis groenlandica

Also known as: Elephanthead, Elephanthead lousewort, Bull elephant's-head.

Habitat: Moist areas, such as edges of lakes or low areas at mid- to high elevations in the mountains

Interest: This is an erect plant with a terminal spike carrying many pink-purple flowers.  The flower spikes range up to 20 cm in length. The leaves are deeply incised. The flowers resemble an elephant head with both ears and a trunk.

Date: July 1, 2006.
Location: Plateau Mountain, Alberta.
