Moss Campion (pink) with Arctic Lupine (blue) looking towards Sugarloaf Mountain

|
Habitat: Dry subalpine slopes in rocky areas or along fractures in the rock. Interest: Moss Campion occurs in "tight", domed, cushioned forms in the subalpine meadows and rocky areas where its low profile and deep tap root help the plant survive the strong winds. Because of the cushion shape, wind blows the cushion like the stream of air over an airplane wing. In the winter, the low form is quickly cover by snow. In summer, the shape exposes the leaves for photosynthesis. Moss Campion occurs in the northern hemisphere and is circumpolar.
Location: Sugarloaf Mountain,
north of Mt Montana, Carcross, Yukon |
