Andy's Rocky Mountain Wildflowers

Rock Jasmine

Androsace chamaejasme

Rock jasmine, Androsace chamaejasme, Alberta copyright 2007 Andy Fyon

Also known as:  Sweet-flowered Androsace

Habitat:

Interest: This tiny flower grows from a trailing, often reddish, stem or from a dense tuft of leaves with an erect stem.  The white flowers, with a yellow ring in the centre, occur at the top of the stem.  It grows on open slopes, on rocky ground.  Certain red-coloured pigments concentrate in the leaves and young stems after snow melt and at the end of the growing season. These pigments (anthocyanin pigments) filter the strong ultraviolet rays of the sun. The flowers are strongly scented.
