by dewclaws. Dewclaws give extra support to the moose.

Elk tracks in
fresh snow. Some elk drag their hoofs leaving what appear as
"skid" marks. Other tracks are quite clear.
These tracks were left by members of a large herd of elk.

River Otter tracks
on a freshly frozen lake. Note the wed-like feet of the distinct
tracks beside a sliding trail left by a second otter.

shore. Two otters slide along the ice, while one otter walked.

vole (field mouse) tracks preserved in fresh snow. The pattern of the
track indicates that the meadow vole was walking. The distance
between the steps, or stride, is about 1 cm.

This mark in the
snow was left by an owl - the specific type of owl is not known. The
mark is left by the owl when it drops down onto a small animal, such
as a meadow vole, that was moving beneath the snow.

Wolf occur in the
Burwash area. A lone wolf left this on a frozen lake, close to a
beaver lodge.

common in the Burwash area. The grouse that left this track was
walking on ice in a cedar swamp.

the photo show where a grouse in flight landed and walked towards the
bottom of the image. The tracks on the left side of the photo
show wing sweep marks, indicating where a grouse walked and then took
off in flight.
