Ranunculus eschscholtzii

Also known as: Eschscholtz Buttercup, Snow Buttercup, Subalpine Buttercup. Habitat: In and beside pools of water from melting snow, along streams, and in moist subalpine and alpine meadows. Interest: This is a hardy buttercup found at the treeline, in the subalpine and alpine. The 5 bright yellow petals are distinctive and the flower head seems a bit large (about 2 cm) for the plant. Interestingly, the flower blooms early in the spring, immediately after snow melt, before the stems have reached their full height. Like many members of the Buttercup Family, the plant may cause dermatitis on human skin when contacted.
Location: Sugarloaf Mountain,
Carcross, Yukon. |
