Habitat: Moist open hillsides, on moist alpine meadows, and on stream banks. Interest: Single leafless flower stem is up to 50 cm tall. The stem terminates in a short raceme of tiny flowers. The flowers are white to pink, 2-3 mm long with reflexed purplish sepals. Basal leaf blades are heart-shaped, up to 3.5 cm wide, and are broad. The leaves are distinctly dentate (coarsely toothed). The scientific name Saxifraga means rock breaker because these plants were thought to break the rocks that they grew upon.
