Heart-leaved Saxifrage Leaves

Habitat: Moist open hillsides, on moist alpine meadows, and on stream banks.

Interest: Single leafless flower stem is up to 50 cm tall. The stem terminates in a short raceme of tiny flowers. The flowers are white to pink, 2-3 mm long with reflexed purplish sepals.  Basal leaf blades are heart-shaped, up to 3.5 cm wide, and are broad. The leaves are distinctly dentate (coarsely toothed).  The scientific name Saxifraga means rock breaker because these plants were thought to break the rocks that they grew upon.

Location: Monument Hill, Keno, Yukon.
