Potentilla hyparctica (also known as Potentilla nana)

Looking southeast from Sugarloaf Mountain. The road in the distance is an old mineral exploration trail. |

Also known as: Low Arctic Cinquefoil, Arctic Cinquefoil Habitat: Dry to moist rocky meadows, tundra and scree slopes in the alpine zone. Interest: A dense plant up to 25 cm tall. The yellow flowers have 5 petals. The leaves are loosely hairy. The branched rootstock may be covered by old, reddish-brown coloured leaf bases. The distinctive basal leaves may help distinguish this species from other Potentilla - the basal leaves of Potentilla hyparctica are strictly trifoliate and the foliage has sparsely, long, hairs and does not have a "white woolly" underside. Generally, this plant prefers acidic, or nitrophilous, or non-calcareous soils. This circumpolar plant occurs from Newfoundland to Alaska, in North America.
Location: Sugarloaf Mountain,
Carcross, Yukon. |
