Boreal Sandwort

Minuartia rubella
(formerly Arenaria rubella)

There are several types of Sandwort.  This species identification may be incorrect.

Also known as: Beautiful Sandwort, Red Seeded Sandwort, Arctic Sandwort, Samll Arctic Sandwort, Marble Sandwort.

Habitat: Subalpine to alpine hummocks, along streams, river terraces, slopes, ridges, cliffs, where seepage occurs and on dry, or moderately well drained areas; calcareous; gravel, sand, till; with low organic content.

Interest: Boreal sandwort is a low growing, cushion form, tufted or matted plant with many basal shoots and a taproot; short linear leaves. The flower stems are up to 10 cm tall, topped with two to ten white flowers. The white petals are about the same length as the green sepals.  The sepals are pointed.

Location: Sugarloaf Mountain, Carcross, Yukon.
