Rhododendron lapponicum

Also known as: Lapland rhododendron. Habitat: Subalpine woods, moist depressions, alpine slopes. Interest: A member of the Heath Family. It is an evergreen shrub. To withstand the cold winds and heavy snow, this shrub has a prostrate or low growth habit - generally less than 50 cm tall, unless in a protected area. The leaves are dark green on top and rusty-coloured on the underside. The flowers are magenta-coloured, have 5 petals, and bloom in clusters at the end of the branches. This is a plant of the northern hemisphere that is found in: Yukon, Greenland, Northwest Territories Islands, Nunavut Islands, and northern Québec. It is found both in the arctic and alpine. It is reported that Lapland Rosebay is difficult to grow in gardens because it it not heat-tolerant. Flower colour: Magenta, pink.
